Bridport – Tasmania’s secret holiday destination

Surely you have always wanted to go to Bridport in North East Tasmania to discover what some Tasmanians have known forever. It’s a gorgeous place for a holiday, with beaches, walks, golf and other relaxation activities, with excellent food and wine. Beaches, walks and golf 

Yes, Bridport has it all. World renown golf courses, Barnbougle Dunes and Lost Farm both in the top one hundred in the world must play courses. You can fly into Launceston, grab a hire car, drop your bags at Platypus Park Country Retreat and be on the course within two hours. After golf return to the forty-acre property to relax on the “beer deck” or it could also be the “wine deck”, and watch the sunset.

The town is surrounded by interesting walks. The relatively easy Foreshore walk, River Forest walk and the Wildflower reserve walk. There is an annual Fun Run held on the last weekend of October which takes in all the tracks, approximately 11 km. The three walks are unique. The Foreshore walk includes the History walk interpretation signs. The wildflower walk has many native Tasmanian species including Native Orchids – best view in Spring and the River Forest walk will take you along the Brid River where you may spot platypus and other wildlife.

 

As the village sits on the edge of Andersons Bay, you are spoilt for choice of beaches to while away your time. Come and choose which is your favourite. Adams beach is the dog friendly exercise beach. In the middle of town are popular beaches like Croquet Lawn, Old Pier, Eastmans, Goftons and then Trent water boat ramp beach is popular with families as the tide rolls in. Sometimes you will spot dolphins and whales in the right season.

Bridestowe Lavender Farm – Tasmania’s purple heaven. When you stay at Platypus Park Country Retreat in Bridport you are just thirty minutes’ drive away from one of the world’s largest commercial lavender farms. Tours of the estate are available and the cafe, serving delicious lavender scones and ice cream, is open all year round. The Lavender blooms from November through till February when the harvest will begin.

Venturing into the hinterland there is even more to explore. In Scottsdale, you can explore the Military Museum, where they have a real helicopter housed, which was used in Vietnam by the Australian forces. At Ledgerwood, you will discover the Tree Carvings. Further along the road and up the hill, you will find Ralph’s Falls and Mt Victoria reserve.

 

You will find the Derby Mountain Bike Trails an easy forty minute drive to the east of Bridport. We hosted a French Enduro team at Platypus Park Country Retreat during the Enduro World Series in 2017. Manager of the BH-Miranda team, Karim Amour, won the Masters section.
